The first thing to do when you have a broken tap is to make sure to not use the tap and turn off the water valve. This is usually placed below the sink and is connected to the tap.
Afterwards turn the tap on to drain any excess water. Put a cloth inside the drainage to avoid losing any parts of the hardware. Disassemble the tap and lay it out in the same arrangement that you took it out.
